How does biology allow our body to process sensations of heat, cold, and touch? How are the nervous systems wired to transmit these sensory signals to the brain? Ardem Patapoutian (Professor, Scripps Research), a Lebanese American molecular biologist and neuroscientist of Armenian descent, received the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his contributions to answering these questions. He discovered sensory receptors that respond to tactile stimuli. On January 26, 2024, the Chey Institute invited him to share his findings and explain how they might change our understanding of the senses. Following his lecture, Lee Junho (Professor, Seoul National University) and Kim Kyuhyung (Professor, DGIST) joined the stage to trace the history of sensory research and discuss the significant milestones leading to Ardem Patapoutian’s achievement.
