The Chey Institute for Advanced Studies hosted a special lecture addressing the theme of the “weaponization of trade” in an era of economic security. Joined by Dr. Victor Cha, Distinguished Professor at Georgetown University, the discussion provided an in-depth analysis of how trade and market access are increasingly being leveraged as instruments of strategic pressure within a new international order where economics and security are deeply intertwined. Focusing in particular on cases where China has utilized economic interdependence as a tool of foreign and security policy, the forum examined how interdependence can serve both as a foundation for prosperity and as a source of vulnerability. The discussion further underscored the importance of building “collective resilience” as a response to such dynamics, offering strategic insights into how a highly globalized economy like the Republic of Korea can strike a balance between efficiency and stability, as well as between openness and resilience.
