Science & Technology Innovation Council

The Science and Technology Innovation Council takes the lead in discussing cutting-edge trends in key scientific and technological fields while pursuing interdisciplinary synergy. Based on active academia-industry collaboration, we aim to spearhead the development of foundational technologies, overcome technological challenges, and contribute to scientific and technological innovation for a sustainable future.

Launched on June 27, 2022, with the participation of 52 leading scholars from Korea and abroad, the Council has continued to grow by engaging emerging experts across a wide range of disciplines. It hosts regular meetings and workshops to exchange the latest research developments, while topic-based working groups foster in-depth, interdisciplinary dialogue. These efforts are geared toward proposing convergent and innovative solutions to various societal issues based on science and technology, as well as mapping out a roadmap for future industrial technologies that will guide Korea and the world.

The theme of the 13th regular meeting was 「The Future of Computing: Quantum and Neuromorphic」. The meeting explored the limitations of conventional computing in the AI era and the emerging potential of quantum and neuromorphic technologies.

 

Dr. Kihwan Kim, Director of the IBS Ion Trap Quantum Computing Research Center, introduced the principles and current challenges of trapped-ion quantum computing, particularly its precision control and scalability.

 

Professor Jungsang Kim, co-founder of IonQ and Professor at Duke University, discussed how quantum computing could become a transformative technology that reshapes future industries.

 

In the second session, Professor Donhee Ham of Harvard University emphasized that advancing neuromorphic computing depends on accurately measuring and understanding the brain, highlighting semiconductor chips with thousands of integrated microelectrodes as a key enabling technology.
