The Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies was established in 1974 upon the belief of the late Chairman CHEY Jong-hyon that the first step toward Korea's future is creating world class thinkers and leaders. For the past 44 years KFAS has supported more than 3,700 students, professors and researchers who have become core leaders in their respective fields.

From the beginning Chairman Chey Jong-hyon envisioned not just supporting individuals but also to establish a worldwide academic networked based in Korea, for the accumulation of knowledge and innovation across society. Thus, in commemoration of the 20 years since his passing, the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies has been established to realize this expansion of his vision.

The revolutionary progress of scientific innovation, the vicissitudes of the international economy and the turbulence of geopolitical risks of our time prove that innovative thinking and knowledge is in dire need.

Utilizing the existing academic network first pioneered by KFAS with Asia Research Centers (ARCs) research institutes and think tanks the CIAS will provoke imperative discussions, provide policy solutions and contribute to social development. Further, through the various international forums the institute will work to become the center of international academic exchange. We will also work to share our knowledge, through public lectures and various media. Through these programs CIAS will pursue the role of a global academic and research institute.

We hope to have your attention, participation and support in realizing our vision.

Thank you.

Chairman Chey Tae-won

For more than 40 years, the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies (KFAS) has made global contributions by fostering international academic exchanges and higher education.

Now, we are taking another leap. In October 2018, the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS) was launched to expand the international academic network established by KFAS, and to focus exclusively on identifying geopolitical risks as well as exploring scientific innovation and its impact on modern society. I hope that the establishment of CIAS provides the initial step towards answering the call for greater innovation and deliberation necessary to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

The Chey Institute is committed to providing solutions in an era of unprecedented challenges. We will analyze issues such as North Korea's nuclear program, US-China strategic competition, ROK-US alliance, opportunities and challenges stemming from scientific innovation and technological progress. We will take an interdisciplinary approach to these issues given the multi-faceted nature of the challenges that we face today.

We ask for your continued support and interest.

Thank you.

President PARK In-kook
