Tokyo Forum

Inaugurated in 2019, the Tokyo Forum, a collaboration between the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies and the University of Tokyo, aims to serve as a platform where internationally-renowned experts can engage in future-oriented discussions on regional and global issues. Topics include risks and opportunities faced by various actors in Northeast Asia in international relations, science and technology, business and trade, and the environment.

Shaping the Future — Dialogue Between Philosophy And Science

The Chey Institute for Advanced Studies and The University of Tokyo co-hosted the fourth annual Tokyo Forum on December 1st and 2nd, 2022. Under the overarching theme of “Shaping the Future,” Tokyo Forum 2022 focused on tackling various global challenges such as war, pandemic, and climate change, and building a sustainable society for the future.

At this forum, distinguished speakers including BAN Ki Moon, former Secretary General of the United Nations, delivered keynote addresses. Esteemed scholars such as Markus GABRIEL and OOGURI Hiroshi had an active discussion during the high-level talk session entitled “Dialogue between Philosophy and Science.”

With renowned panelists from all around the world, the forum addressed various issues including global commons stewardship, ways to confront global crises based on world philosophy, transformative changes necessary for sustainable development, what future society might look like with robots and AI, and complex challenges arising from interconnections of security and climate change.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the forum was held in a hybrid format with both in-person and online participation.
