As the climate crisis intensifies, there is growing demand for a fundamental transition from fossil fuel–dependent industries to sustainable manufacturing based on renewable feedstocks. One promising approach is the use of systems metabolic engineering and synthetic biology to reprogram microbial metabolism for the production of valuable chemicals. Can microbial cell factories be engineered to convert greenhouse gases into plastics more efficiently and competitively than conventional petrochemical processes?
