To proactively prepare for viruses that have not yet emerged, researchers are pursuing two complementary strategies: predicting future viral threats and developing broadly protective vaccines. What are the limitations of current approaches to virus prediction and vaccine development, and how can they be overcome? By combining antibody-based and T cell-based immune strategies, is it possible to develop vaccines that provide effective protection against viruses that have not yet appeared?
