Special Lecture by GONOKAMI Makoto (University of Tokyo)
The University of Tokyo Future Society Initiative: Contributing to the Future of Humanity and the Planet

2018.11.11 16:00 - 18:00

On November 11, Chey Institute for Advanced Studies invited Gonokami Makoto, President of the University of Tokyo, to deliver a special lecture on the university’s Future Society Initiative, a program launched in 2017 with the aim of promoting science, technology, and innovation to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In light of this initiative, the University of Tokyo has been hosting numerous interdisciplinary research and educational activities related to all 17 SDGs.

During the lecture, President Gonokami describes we are experiencing a digital revolution, which is a cause for both promise and concern. Rapid technological development may exacerbate and accelerate social disparity. In order to remediate this problem, as President Gonokami notes, we must work together so that the benefits and opportunities of the digital revolution are universally shared. He further emphasizes that universities play a vital role in shaping a common vision of the future and encouraging people to strive towards that vision.

In his final remarks, President Gonokami expressed his enthusiasm for next year’s inaugural Tokyo Forum, which will be co-hosted by Chey Institute and the University of Tokyo.
