Special Sessions

Chey Institute for Advanced Studies strives to create high-quality content by co-organizing international exchange programs and establishing an academic network with renowned research institutes from both home and abroad. By doing so, we hope to come up with solutions to many of the global challenges that we face as society in trade, finance, environment, energy, and other arenas.

Main Forum

  • World Knowledge Forum

    Chey Institute for Advanced Studies has organized a special session at the World Knowledge Forum, a global forum hosted by the Maekyung Media Group, since 2017. The 2017 session was titled “Endgame: A Hard Debate on North Korean Nuclear Threat.” In 2018, the special session was organized under the title, “After the Singapore Summit.” The 2019 session focused on the topic of “Northeast Asia Amid Geopolitical Risks”, which identified geopolitical challenges that threaten the region’s security. Panelists included Marc KNAPPER (U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Korea and Japan), Victor CHA (Korea Chair at Center for Strategic and International Studies), Vincent BROOKS (former Commander of USFK), JIA Qingguo (Professor at Peking University), and Joseph YUN (former U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy). The session was moderated by PARK In-kook (President, Chey Institute).

  • World Peace Forum

    The World Peace Forum is a high-level international security forum hosted annually by Tsinghua University. The forum has seen many former and current presidents, prime ministers, ministers, and renowned scholars deliver remarks on issues related to international security. Since 2013, Chey Institute for Advanced Studies has frequently collaborated with Tsinghua University to organize a special session on “ROK-PRC Relations and Regional Security” by inviting experts and scholars from Korea, the US, and China to discuss Northeast Asian security and Korea-China relations.

  • Jeju Forum

    Jeju Forum, organized by Jeju Peace Institute, was launched in 2001 as the region's multilateral platform to tackle major regional issues. The Chey Institute for Advanced Studies began its partnership with Jeju Forum in 2017 to organize a special session on geopolitical issues, including peace on the Korean Peninsula, Northeast Asian security architecture, and US-China relations. Panelists include experts and scholars from Korea, the U.S., and China.

Other Forums

Since 2004, the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies has been hosting the International Confucian Forum in collaboration with Renmin University of China. Focusing on Confucianism, the essence of Eastern philosophy, the forum aims to explore ways to overcome the crises and challenges facing Asia-and humanity as a whole-and to contribute to the advancement of human society.

Since 2015, the Chey Institute has also hosted the Nanjing Forum with Nanjing University, the Tianjin Forum with Nankai University, and the Shandong Forum with Shandong University. These global forums aim to promote regional cooperation and to share wisdom that enables flexible responses to the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing era.
